President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the establishment of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), a groundbreaking step set to reshape the transportation landscape in the country. The initiative is set to drive the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in vehicles, aiming to deploy over 11,500 new CNG-enabled vehicles and provide 55,000 CNG conversion kits for existing gasoline-dependent vehicles. In addition to its impact on the transportation sector, the initiative aligns with the President’s directive to boost local manufacturing, assembly, and job creation.
The comprehensive approach of the PCNGI encompasses a range of strategic elements:
- Empowering Workshops Programme: The initiative will establish a nationwide network of workshops to facilitate CNG vehicle integration and maintenance.
- Local Assembly and Job Creation: An emphasis will be placed on local assembly and the creation of job opportunities, with initial focus on mass transit systems and student hubs to reduce transit costs for citizens.
- Stakeholder-Operated Intrastate Mass Transit Systems: The PCNGI will support the development of intrastate mass transit systems built on CNG, working with states to introduce CNG buses.
- Private Mass Transit Operators: Existing private mass transit operators will also be part of the initiative, deploying CNG buses with innovative financing programs.
- Investment Incentives: To promote investment in CNG processing, distribution, and utilization, the initiative will provide incentives for enhanced investment and partnerships.
- After-Sales Services and Maintenance: Training and technology transfer will be extended to support the after-sales services and maintenance sub-industry, creating sustainable jobs.
President Tinubu’s vision for assembling CNG-enabled vehicles within the country aligns with broader goals of economic growth, employment generation, and strengthening domestic automotive manufacturing capacities. This initiative launch underscores the government’s commitment to a cleaner environment, as it seeks to reduce carbon emissions and promote energy security through the utilization of indigenous natural gas resources.
By embracing the PCNGI, Nigeria is taking a significant step toward cleaner, more sustainable transportation and contributing to its overall development objectives.
