A prominent Nigerian statesman, Ayo Adebanjo, has passed away at the age of 96. The revered elder statesman, who was a key figure in Nigerian politics and a strong advocate for regional autonomy, died on Wednesday night after a brief illness. His death has left the nation in mourning as political leaders and citizens alike reflect on his remarkable contributions to the country.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed his deep sorrow, describing Adebanjo as a “patriot, a defender of democracy, and a voice for the voiceless.” In a statement released by the presidency, Tinubu praised Adebanjo’s unwavering dedication to the principles of justice, fairness, and the fight for a better Nigeria. “His legacy will endure in the hearts of all who championed a unified and just nation,” the statement read.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari also extended his condolences, calling Adebanjo a “steadfast advocate for the rule of law.” Buhari said, “He was a man whose words and actions resonated deeply within the fabric of Nigerian society, and his loss is a monumental one for our country.”

Ayo Adebanjo was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere. Throughout his life, Adebanjo remained steadfast in his advocacy for regional autonomy, a fair distribution of resources, and the promotion of democracy. He played an instrumental role in the political struggles that led to the eventual return of democratic governance in the country, particularly in the 1990s.

Tributes have poured in from across the nation, with many politicians, intellectuals, and citizens acknowledging Adebanjo’s role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape. “Ayo Adebanjo was a man of great wisdom, whose commitment to justice and fairness helped illuminate the path toward a better Nigeria,” said one political analyst.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, but several political figures have already expressed their intention to attend in order to honor the legacy of a man whose influence transcended party lines and generations.

As the nation mourns, Nigerians reflect on the invaluable lessons left behind by a man who lived through Nigeria’s defining political moments and remained committed to the pursuit of equity and justice for all citizens.
