Nigerian musician and social media personality, Speed Darlington, has been granted bail in the sum of N20 million after spending nearly two months in detention. The controversial figure, whose real name is Darlington Okoye, was arrested in late November 2024 on charges relating to an alleged altercation with a police officer during a public event in Lagos.

The 34-year-old artist, known for his unorthodox style and brash public persona, had been remanded in custody while investigations into the incident continued. His legal team, led by top human rights lawyer Ifeoma Okeke, argued that the musician’s continued detention was unlawful, citing procedural delays and the absence of substantial evidence against him.

Speed Darlington’s release followed a bail hearing on Tuesday, where the presiding judge, Justice Adebisi Ojo, ruled in favor of granting bail, setting the amount at N20 million with two sureties of similar standing. According to the court, the sureties must be gainfully employed and provide proof of residency within Lagos state.

In a statement released shortly after his bail was granted, Speed Darlington expressed his relief and frustration, saying, “CP mouth na ocean, no be small thing, but I dey happy I don come out. I’ll never stop speaking my truth.” The reference to “CP mouth” appeared to be a dig at the police’s handling of the case, as “CP” is commonly used to refer to the Commissioner of Police.

Fans of the artist, who have been rallying for his release across social media platforms under the hashtag #FreeSpeedDarlington, celebrated the news with widespread support. Many expressed frustration over what they called an “unnecessary” detention of the artist, with some demanding a full investigation into the circumstances that led to his arrest.

While out on bail, Speed Darlington is expected to return to court in the coming weeks to face trial. Legal experts are divided over the potential outcomes, with some predicting the charges will be reduced or dismissed, given the lack of clear evidence in the case.

Speed Darlington has made headlines several times for his controversial statements, music videos, and social media posts. Known for his bold and often divisive commentary, he has become a polarizing figure in Nigerian pop culture.
