Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has addressed allegations of incitement from the federal government regarding his stance on the Coastal Highway Project’s priority in Nigeria.

Obi reiterated his position that the Coastal Highway Project is not a current priority for Nigeria, emphasizing that such a massive project at this time would exacerbate unemployment, hunger, and poverty in an already troubled nation.

He stressed the need to prioritize internal roads to stimulate the economy. Obi also took the opportunity to respond to criticisms of demolitions that occurred during his tenure as governor of Anambra State, asserting that these actions were necessary for public good and were carried out with transparency and adherence to due process.

In a statement issued by one of his media aides, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Obi clarified his approach to demolitions, citing examples such as the relocation of the Onitsha North local government headquarters to restore a stadium to its original purpose and the reversion of the Onitsha South Stadium to a local playing ground.

He underscored his administration’s commitment to prioritizing infrastructure repair and maintenance while minimizing adverse impacts on communities. Obi emphasized the distinction between his actions on existing roads and the disruptive nature of the ongoing Coastal Highway Project.

His statement aims to provide clarity and transparency regarding his actions as governor and his current position on infrastructure priorities in Nigeria.
