Akawor Steps Down Hours After Tinubu Appoints Him Federal Commissioner
Desmond Akawor, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, has tendered his resignation, revealed in a letter dated November 22, 2023. This development comes shortly after President Bola Tinubu appointed him as the Federal Commissioner representing Rivers State in the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission.
Addressed to the PDP Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umaru Damagun, Akawor’s resignation letter stated that his decision is directly linked to his recent federal appointment. He confirmed handing over all responsibilities to his deputy, Aaron Chukwuemeka.
In the letter, Akawor expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the PDP in Rivers State from 2020 to 2023. He acknowledged the support received from the national body and affirmed his ongoing commitment to the party’s ideals.
President Tinubu appointed Akawor on Thursday to the role of Federal Commissioner representing Rivers State in the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission. The appointment follows the tragic demise of the previous commissioner from Rivers State, Asondu Temple, earlier in the month.
In response to the appointment, Akawor expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for considering him worthy to serve in this capacity. He affirmed his dedication to the country and assured continued availability to provide support for party affairs whenever called upon.
Prior to his recent appointment, Akawor held various roles, including Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Korea, Minister of State of the Federal Capital Territory, Sole Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt Development Authority, CEO of the Niger Delta River Basin Development Authority, and Executive Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (Engineering & Technical Services).
