AMASSOMA, BAYELSA STATE – Outrage has erupted in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, following the fatal stabbing of a final-year student of Niger Delta University on Monday.

The victim, Francis Palowei, was attacked at the Sand Dump, a popular spot for students to relax and socialize. According to community sources, Palowei was stabbed by local youths after refusing to pay them N150.

Palowei, who hailed from the Obrigbene community in Ekeremor Local Government Area, was set to graduate on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, during the university’s next convocation ceremony.

The Nigerian Police Force has since launched an investigation and search for the perpetrators. Officers have been deployed to the community to maintain order and conduct a manhunt for those responsible for the attack.

The Public Relations Officer of Niger Delta University, Indoni Engezi, confirmed the incident on Wednesday and assured that the institution’s academic activities were not disrupted. Engezi explained that while the Sand Dump owner does not charge for using the premises, some local youths have been demanding a fee of N150 from visitors.

Musa Mohammed, the Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, has sent additional police manpower to the community to ensure peace and expedite the search for the culprits.
