Lagos, Nigeria— Nollywood actress and producer Adanma Luke has publicly appealed for forgiveness from Nigerians following the tragic boat accident that claimed the lives of actor John Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope, and four other crew members. The accident occurred in April while the team was working on Luke’s film, The Other Side of Life.
In an emotional video shared on her Instagram page on Monday, Luke expressed her deep sorrow and revealed that she has been battling depression since the incident. The actress stated that the tragedy has taken a significant toll on her mental health, leaving her in desperate need of prayers.
“I’m just here to say that I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Nigerians. I’m sorry I took away your loved ones—from what people are saying,” Luke said, her voice filled with grief. “I’m very sad. Inasmuch as I try to be strong, I don’t see myself strong. I’m so sad that this had to happen on my set.”
Luke acknowledged the criticism she has faced online since the accident, with many blaming her for the deaths of the actors. She explained that the tragedy was not intentional and questioned why it had to happen to her. “It has been destined to happen, it is meant to happen, but why me?” she lamented.
The actress disclosed that she had never experienced depression until after the incident and has been struggling to cope ever since. “I’m gradually losing my life. I’m regretting a lot of things. I don’t even know how to call people for jobs,” she admitted, adding that she has been unable to work or reach out for new opportunities since the tragedy.
Addressing rumors that she had gone on vacation following the accident, Luke clarified that she had been staying indoors, dealing with the aftermath and supporting the families of the victims. “People are even saying I went on vacation, I’m here for business. I’ve been indoors doing nothing and yet still catering to the families that lost their loved ones. Where do you people expect me to get all the money from? I need to work.”

Luke also recounted the circumstances surrounding the boat accident, revealing that she had requested a safer location for the shoot but was assured by her team that the area was secure. “The first time I went there before the main shooting, I asked why they weren’t providing life jackets. Then my PM told me that is how they do it there—that a lot of people have been crossing and nothing is happening,” she explained.
Following the incident, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) took action by barring actors from participating in any film produced by Luke until further notice.

As Luke continues to navigate the emotional and professional fallout from the accident, she reiterated her plea for understanding and forgiveness. “Please, Nigerians, I’m sorry. You don’t know what I’m going through,” she concluded, her voice heavy with sorrow.
