During the handing over ceremony at the Command Headquarters in Lagos yesterday, the newly appointed Commissioner of Police (CP) for Lagos State, Idowu Owohunwa, highlighted the importance of operational efficiency and robust inter-agency collaboration with the military detachments, as well as other state and federal law enforcement and public safety agencies. This was stated in a press release by the CP.

On assuming leadership of the Centre of Excellence, the Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, stated that he plans to improve the policing narrative in the State by utilizing the existing strengths. He also assured me that he would leverage his professional experience and implement an all-society strategy to enhance operational standards in policing.

Owohunwa further explained that his plan would involve implementing citizen engagement strategies, intelligence-driven tools, and strategic crime prevention, detection, and prosecution approaches. The CP addressed the officers and emphasized their obligation to keep Lagosians safe and secure while upholding the rule of law, professionalism, and respecting their fundamental human rights.

Idowu Owohunwa promised to provide the necessary leadership to the State Police Command with a focus on discipline, training, capacity development, professionalism, and public accountability. He expressed his commitment to adopting a problem-solving framework based on the policing principle of zero-tolerance to crime, crime mapping, and the use of crime statistics and intelligence analysis tools to support perspective policing.

Owohunwa acknowledged that an upcoming election is a critical event and stated that the outgoing CP had briefed him on the strategies and action plans for the exercise. He assured Lagosians of the firm resolve and full preparedness of the Lagos State Police Command to ensure that the election process is peaceful, secure, and credible, with the support and trust of the government, residents, and all officers of the Command.

The Commissioner of Police highlighted that police operations during the upcoming election would adhere to the Revised Code of Conduct for Police Officers on Election Security Duty, recently created by the Inspector General of Police and distributed to all State Police Commands, including Lagos State.

Owohunwa urged the electorate to collaborate with the police and vote lawfully during the electoral process. He assured Lagosians that the Command is dedicated to identifying, isolating, and taking decisive action against any individual or group that intends to test their commitment to guaranteeing peace during the electoral process.
