The South-South zone of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a stern challenge to Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state, urging him to provide a comprehensive list of his accomplishments since taking the helm of leadership in the state. The party’s regional branch also asserted that Obaseki, who succeeded former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, has failed to demonstrate significant achievements during his tenure spanning over seven years, instead, attempting to overshadow the developmental strides achieved by his predecessor.
Blessing Agbomhere, the South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary of the APC, accused Obaseki of evading accountability for his alleged incompetence by shifting blame to the newly inaugurated administration of President Tinubu. In a recent statement, Agbomhere refuted Obaseki’s assertion that the deplorable state of federal roads in Edo state and the subsequent hardships faced by the populace were attributable to the removal of petrol subsidy and the policies of the federal government.
The statement read in part: “Despite taking over office in 2008 when the state’s monthly revenue dropped to N1.6 billion due to the world economic crisis while IGR was N30 million bringing the total to N1.9 billion.
“We therefore challenge the incumbent Governor Obaseki to show to the world what impact he has been able to make rather than the usual promises of Memorandum of Understanding which his government has been notorious for signing with fictitious entities with nothing to show for it.
Agbomhere’s statement highlighted the economic challenges faced by Edo state when Obaseki took office in 2008, citing a drastic drop in monthly revenue due to global economic turmoil. Despite these circumstances, Agbomhere maintained that Obaseki must provide tangible evidence of his impact on the state rather than relying on empty promises and Memoranda of Understanding with questionable entities.
The APC’s South-South zone also called upon Governor Obaseki to cease his attempts to incite the people of Edo state against President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The party emphasized the upcoming process of cabinet minister screening and swearing-in as a critical juncture for national transformation.
“We call on Governor Obaseki to desist from inciting the people of Edo State against the administration of President Bola Tinubu. We urge Nigerians to be patient as the process of transformation will soon kick off with the screening and swearing in of cabinet ministers which is expected in the days ahead.”
As the exchange of accusations and challenges between Governor Obaseki and the APC continues, Nigerians await further developments and anticipate potential shifts in the political landscape of Edo state. Stay tuned for updates as this contentious narrative unfolds.
