Abuja, Nigeria – On Tuesday, the President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, provided reassurance to Nigerian workers, affirming the federal government’s commitment to reviewing workers’ salaries as a measure to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

In a statement released by the President of the Senate’s Media Office in Abuja, it was revealed that Akpabio conveyed this assurance during a courtesy meeting with Governor Abiodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State and members of the National Assembly from the state.

Akpabio justified the removal of fuel subsidy, which was implemented by the administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a necessary step to combat corruption within the Petroleum sector. He stressed that this action marked the beginning of the fight against corruption in the system.

“Nigeria, as a country, would not have been able to sustain itself in the coming years if the fuel subsidy had not been removed,” stated Akpabio, emphasizing the importance of the move. He further added that the government would review the salaries and wages of workers to ensure that every citizen receives a living wage.

During the meeting, Akpabio praised the representatives from Ekiti State in the 10th National Assembly, hailing them as dedicated and committed members of the legislature. He expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Ekiti State for the greater benefit of the nation.

Governor Abiodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State also used the opportunity to commend Akpabio for his achievements in office during his first month as the President of the 10th Senate. He assured the Senate President of the full support of the people and government of Ekiti State in his tenure and their willingness to work together to drive the progress of the country.

As discussions continue on the removal of fuel subsidy and its effects, the federal government’s commitment to addressing workers’ welfare provides a glimmer of hope for Nigerian workers facing economic uncertainties.
