Former Senate President, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Hon Ghali Na’Abba, describing it as a national tragedy and a setback to democratic progress. Similarly, former presidential candidate and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has characterized the deaths of Na’Abba and former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State as a substantial loss to Nigeria’s politics and democracy.

Anyim, who served concurrently with Na’Abba, shared plans to fly the former speaker abroad for medical assistance, lamenting, “Hon. Ghali’s death is a national tragedy and a setback to our democratic progress.” He expressed gratitude for Na’Abba’s support during his challenging Senate tenure, highlighting their collaborative efforts to redefine the relationship between the executive and legislature, emphasizing legislative independence.

Reflecting on Na’Abba’s legacy, Anyim proposed naming the House of Representatives Wing of the National Assembly Complex as “Hon. Ghali Umar Na’abba’s Wing” to honor the pioneer work accomplished during his tenure.

Olawepo-Hashim, in a statement from his media office in Abuja, described Na’Abba and Akeredolu as political giants who significantly impacted the nation’s political landscape. He praised Na’Abba as a patriot, selfless politician, and true democrat who played a crucial role in resisting dictatorship and establishing legislative independence.

Regarding Akeredolu, Olawepo-Hashim highlighted the former governor’s contributions to upholding the rule of law in Nigeria through his legal practice and presidency of the NBA before entering partisan politics. He emphasized Akeredolu’s belief in the principles of true federalism, declaring his death as a great loss to the nation.

Olawepo-Hashim shared personal connections with both Na’Abba and Akeredolu, recounting their association in the “class of 1999” and Na’Abba’s role as co-chair of his 2019 presidential campaign council. The politician expressed deep hope for Na’Abba’s recovery during their last meeting. Olawepo-Hashim extended heartfelt prayers for the families and loved ones of the departed leaders, seeking the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
