Former Imo State governor, Emeka Ihedioha, characterized the mass departure of members from the Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following his exit from the party as a testament to his leadership abilities.

In an interview on Arise News Channel’s programme ‘PrimeTime’, Ihedioha attributed his decision to leave the PDP to the overwhelming desire of his followership for him to spearhead change and reconstruct Imo State. He criticized the PDP’s direction, stating that it no longer held the confidence of Nigerians at both national and state levels due to its failure to address internal issues and adapt to evolving political dynamics.

Reflecting on his departure, Ihedioha explained, “It was inevitable. The warning signs were clear before the elections. Despite our efforts to address internal issues, the party continued on a downward trajectory, diverging from the vision of its founding fathers. My decision was guided by the sentiments of my supporters who believed the party had lost its way.”

He pointed out the party’s declining performance in recent elections and its failure to take corrective measures, emphasizing the need for a new platform to pursue progress. Ihedioha highlighted the significant number of prominent figures who resigned from the party after his departure, interpreting it as a vote of confidence in his leadership and their shared vision for democratic progress. Among those who left were former governors, deputy governors, former ministers, members of the House of Representatives, senatorial candidates, and politically active individuals.

The exodus underscores the shifting political landscape in Imo State and Ihedioha’s role as a central figure in shaping its future trajectory.
