Yesterday, former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu made an unexpected appearance in court for the start of the trial for conspiracy to harvest organs in Courtroom 2 at Old Bailey.

Yesterday, former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu appeared in court for the start of the trial for conspiracy to harvest organs, along with his wife Beatrice, daughter Sonia, and Dr. Obinna Obeta. Ekweremadu arrived at the court just after 11:00 a.m. (12:00 p.m. Nigerian time), dressed in a grey sleeveless T-shirt and trousers of the same color. Beatrice arrived later, but Sonia was absent and the prosecutor informed the court that she was in the hospital. When asked by the clerk if he was Ike Ekweremadu, he responded affirmatively, and Beatrice gave the same response when prompted.

Subsequently, the court adjourned until 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. after the prosecutor informed the judge that the defense had only replied to part of the questions asked on Monday evening and needed more time to study it. This proposal was approved. When the court resumed at 3:00 p.m., the prosecution requested another delay. The prosecutor said they would be ready at 12 noon the next day.

The judge asked for clarification and the prosecutor confirmed 12 noon. Before adjournment, Sonia’s lawyer requested that she be excused from attendance due to being on dialysis. The judge said they would be flexible to allow excused absence when necessary, but asked if Sonia could attend at 2:00 p.m. After confirming she could, the judge excused her from attending at 12 noon. Ekweremadu has been in custody since his arrest along with his wife on June 23, 2022. His wife was granted bail but he was not. The trial is set to begin today.
