In a stern address during the commencement of the 19th Nigeria Editors Conference 2023 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, President Bola Tinubu expressed concern over the escalating prevalence of false narratives and misinformation in the nation. He asserted that this alarming trend poses a serious threat to the foundational principles of Nigerian society.

The president, speaking on Wednesday, conveyed his gratitude to editors for their significant contributions to the struggle for Nigerian democracy. Emphasizing the need for media involvement in addressing the issue, he highlighted the theme of the conference, “Stimulating Economic Growth, Technological Advancement: The role of the media.”

Representing the president at the event, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed that the Federal Government is actively working to counter the systemic moral decline in the country. This initiative involves a sustained mass reorientation campaign aimed at fostering unity, patriotism, and the promotion of positive values among Nigerians.

The president, through the minister, urged Nigerian editors to actively support this movement for moral rectitude among their fellow countrymen. He emphasized the collective duty to combat misinformation by advocating for fact-checking, responsible reporting, and promoting media and digital literacy. Tinubu underscored the importance of fortifying the nation’s defenses against the corrosive effects of false narratives.

Against the backdrop of a prolonged period of imminent systemic moral decline leading to the erosion of national values, the president’s representative informed the audience about the Ministry of Information and National Orientation’s efforts to change the narrative in the country. The sustained mass reorientation campaign seeks to redirect the nation towards a stronger sense of national identity and shared values. Tinubu appealed to all editors to actively support the campaign for national rectitude among Nigerians.
