BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Thousands of jubilant fans flooded the streets of Buenos Aires early Monday morning to celebrate Argentina’s victory in the Copa America, defeating Colombia 1-0 in a thrilling final that went into extra time.
Amidst the backdrop of the city’s iconic Obelisk, Argentine supporters draped in national flags erupted in cheers and chants despite the winter chill in the southern hemisphere. The festivities continued for over four hours, marked by a euphoric atmosphere that united fans in their pride for Lionel Messi and the national team.
However, the celebration was abruptly interrupted when police intervened with water trucks and officers to disperse the crowds, leading to a sudden rush of people. Although some confrontations ensued, authorities reported no arrests or injuries during the dispersal.
“We are champions of America, let’s enjoy this precious moment that is unique for us since we have the chance to celebrate with the greatest who is … Messi and the farewell of ‘Fideo’ (Angel) Di Maria,” exclaimed Pablo Inigo in a statement to AFP amidst the celebrations.
President Javier Milei joined in congratulating Argentina’s victory, posting enthusiastically on social media, “Let’s go Argentina carajo..!!!!! We are champions again…!!!!”
This victory marks Argentina’s third consecutive major tournament title, adding to their Copa America win in 2021 and their triumph in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The joyous occasion drew hundreds to public gathering spots, where fans followed the match on their phones due to a lack of broadcast screens in the vicinity.
Despite the exuberance, the celebrations were tinged with sadness following the tragic death of a 29-year-old fan. Before the match, the fan climbed a structure near the Obelisk to wave a flag but tragically lost his balance and fell six meters. Firefighters later removed his body from the scene.
The win has sparked renewed pride and celebration across Argentina, underscoring the country’s passionate devotion to football and the enduring legacy of its star players.
