Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, pledged to implement restructuring as demanded by the South-West region during a campaign event yesterday.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, promised to implement restructuring and reforms to elevate the status of traditional institutions during a campaign event in Ibadan, Oyo State. He made these promises while addressing a large crowd of party members from across the 33 local government areas of the state and during a visit to the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun. Despite the absence of Governor Seyi Makinde, who is a member of the G-5 governors in disagreement with the party’s national leadership, he was acknowledged by all speakers including Atiku. It was reported that a truce was brokered between Atiku and Makinde at a meeting held at the residence of former Governor Senator Rasheed Ladoja on Wednesday night.

Atiku Abubakar, former vice president of Nigeria, was accompanied by a group of party leaders, including his vice presidential candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and PDP National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, as well as governors and former governors, to a rally in Ibadan. At the rally, Atiku praised the current governor of Ibadan, Makinde, and promised to implement restructuring in his administration, giving more power to states and local government areas. He also criticized the current APC administration for not fulfilling its promises of restructuring.

According to the speaker, restructuring Nigeria will be a key focus during his tenure. This includes granting more power and autonomy to states and local governments. He criticized previous leaders for failing to implement restructuring and urged support for the PDP in order to bring about progress. The National Chairman of PDP, Ayu, praised party members for attending the rally and noted that Makinde is a dedicated party member who prioritizes the party’s interests.

The National Working Committee of the party is committed to returning the party to the people and encourages those who are dissatisfied to come back. Other speakers praised Makinde for his efforts in organizing the rally and his work on development. Atiku, speaking at the palace of Olubadan, pledged to introduce reforms that will empower traditional rulers to effectively fulfill their roles in maintaining peace and security in their communities. He acknowledged that Nigeria is facing security challenges, and emphasized the importance of traditional rulers in addressing these issues. Atiku stressed that the PDP government will work to ensure that the traditional institution plays its rightful role in maintaining security and will engage with people from all regions to accomplish this. Oba Balogun also addressed the ongoing crisis within the PDP, urging Atiku and other leaders to make efforts to reconcile with Governor Makinde.

The Olubadan, speaking through the Otun Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Tajudeen Ajibola, urged the PDP presidential candidate and other leaders of the party to bring about genuine reconciliation between him and all the aggrieved members before the election, emphasizing that unity is crucial for the success of the party. He also urged the candidate to prioritize security if elected as president on February 25th. He expressed that the people of Ibadan want the creation of an Ibadan State and that traditional rulers want to be considered in order to contribute to the country’s socio-economic development.
