Popular Nigerian comedian and actor, Adebowale Adedayo, known as Mr Macaroni, has urged his fellow celebrities to seek legal redress in court if they are defamed online, rather than resorting to “illegal” arrests or detentions through the police.
Mr Macaroni claims to have been targeted by trolls affiliated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) but has never pursued extrajudicial actions. He emphasizes the “serious danger” of using law enforcement for “illegal detention of citizens.”
The actor advised his colleagues to stop using their government connections to “illegally detain citizens.” In a post on his social media handle, Mr Macaroni stated:
- “If someone insults you or defames your character, go to court and seek justice.”
- “I have been insulted and lied about by APC trolls, but I have never used the police to illegally arrest or detain anyone, and I never will.”
- “There is serious danger in using the police to illegally detain citizens.”
- “I urge those supporting this abuse of power to consider how they would feel if they or their loved ones were targeted.”
He clarifies his position is not to condone online bullying or harassment. He believes those involved should face the consequences of their actions, acknowledging the mental strain it can cause. However, he emphasizes using the legal system to address defamation.
Mr. Macaroni’s advice comes amidst reports of Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham arresting a social media user who allegedly wished harm on her child.
